There are basically two ways to protect openings from debris impact. One is to install window and door products designed and tested to meet impact, pressure and cycle test requirements. The other way is to cover the windows or doors with external protection devices - generally called shutters.
Shutters have been on the market for many years, but it was only after Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida in 1992, that the building codes required shutter products to be explicitly tested for impact. Therefore it is critical to determine the correct Protection Code and year installed for each opening.
You should only use products that have been tested and approved using a standard established through a recognized product approval system or evaluation report. Impact-resistant windows, shutters, and doors should have a proof of compliance identified on a sticker or label, or imprinted into the product. Check to be sure your shutters are working properly and fit securely.
