Course Description:


Students will learn the importance of residential building codes, gain an understanding of the societal and financial impacts of codes, explore commonly adopted residential building code sections and apply examples to real-world applications, and understand how codes and beyond-code construction increase community resilience.

Objectives:

Students will develop their technical ability as it relates residential building codes and resilience. To achieve this course goal, students will:
  1. Examine the history of residential building codes and the current system

  2. Explore commonly adopted residential building code sections and identify how they affect projects

  3. Calculate the difference between building below code, at code or beyond code;

  4. Recognize the importance of building at or beyond residential codes;

  5. Illustrate through application how residential codes reduce community risk and vulnerability;

  6. Design a home with resilience features against natural disasters.
